Big Brown Bat

Big Brown Bat

Of the 16 species of Bats native to the State of Georgia, the one you will most commonly encounter is the Little Brown Bat and Big Brown Bat. The Little Brown Bat, measuring 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches in length and having a wingspan of 8-11 inches, is often found roosting in gable vents and soffit eaves on homes. The Big Brown Bat comes in at 4-5 inches in length with a wingspan of 11-13 inches, are dark brown to black on its ears, feet, and wings. Nocturnal, and usually nesting nearby water, these bats are capable of eating half of their weight in insects overnight. Difficult to control, this animal will come back to the same place to nest seasonally and can cause some health concerns to homeowners. Bat feces or “guano” can carry disease and a nasty fungus called histoplasmosis. This can contaminate your attic and home and cause lung disease in humans that breathe this air born fungus in over time. Their droppings are often identified with a strong Ammonia smell, or black pepper like pieces piling up under gable vents or eaves on a home. Consult one of our professionals if you think your home is becoming victim to this nuisance wildlife animal.
