The Opossum measures 21-36 inches in length and weighs 4-16 pounds on average. They are very similar in size to cats, have grey fur on the body and a white face, pointed snout, black eyes and a hairless tail 1/3 of their body. The Opossum is known for “playing possum” or acting as if deceased when they are threatened. This act is completely involuntary and part of their defense mechanism. The Opossum does not build a den or home but takes over abandoned dens from other animals. This is one reason why they are commonly found inside attics of homes, crawlspaces, under sheds and woodpiles in yards. These animals are opportunistic and eat almost anything including dead animals and plant matter. A female Opossum can give birth to 4-8 babies or “joeys” and have 2 litters a year. The mother has a pouch that these babies will feed in for around 50 days. After the feeding period they emerge from their mother’s pouch and ride on her back for another 100 days, then venture off on their own. Opossums are extremely skilled climbers and swimmers. Not aggressive by nature, you can identify a problem with trash strewn about, torn air conditioning duct work and insulation, and droppings inside the attic which look like cat droppings. Due to their low body temperature, it is extremely rare for an Opossum to carry Rabies. Fun fact, they are considered the only Marsupial to inhabit the United States.
