Joro Spider

Joro Spider

A native spider of Japan and East Asia, this spider was first discovered in the State of Georgia in 2014. Numbers have grown significantly due to weather changes in the region. This spider is best identified by its long legs and bright colorful body. This spider is considered an Orb Weaver. It can bite humans and pets, but like other Orb Weaver’s they have small mouthparts and is harmless. Typically nesting high up in trees, you will notice their intricate webs spun on powerlines and tree limbs 6 feet and higher. Commonly mistaken with the Banana Spider, they are both similar in color (the Joro Spider has red markings on its underbelly) the Banana Spider typically spins webs under 6 feet.
