Millipedes
illipedes are a brown to black, long worm like insect with segmented body parts and many pairs of legs ranging in size from 11/16 of an inch to 4 1/2 inches. The name Millipede means “Thousand Leggers”, but they typically only have anywhere from 30 to over 300 pairs of legs depending on the species. This insect is nocturnal and found under rocks, in mulch, and piles of leaves or garbage. They are scavengers by nature, feeding on decaying plant matter and dead insects. They are not dangerous to humans; however, they can excrete a toxin from the side of their bodies, that has a foul odor and causes issues with some pets. This toxin is also irritating to human skin and can cause irritation and blistering. This occasional invader can be controlled with regular pest control service from a professional.
